management of chronic granulomatous disease revolves around 2 goals: 1) diagnose disease antibiotic prophylaxis can given keep infection occurring, , 2) educate patient or condition prompt treatment can given if infection occurs.


antibiotics

physicians prescribe antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole prevent bacterial infections. drug has benefit of sparing normal bacteria of digestive tract. fungal infection commonly prevented itraconazole, although newer drug of same type called voriconazole may more effective. use of drug purpose still under scientific investigation.


immunomodulation

interferon, in form of interferon gamma-1b (actimmune) approved food , drug administration prevention of infection in cgd. has been shown reduce infections in cgd patients 70% , decrease severity. although exact mechanism still not entirely understood, has ability give cgd patients more immune function , therefore, greater ability fight off infections. therapy has been standard treatment cgd several years.


hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (hsct)

hematopoietic stem cell transplantation matched donor curative although not without significant risk.
